Churning occurs when a broker engages in excessive buying and selling of securities in a customer's account primarily to generate commissions, rather than to benefit the customer. It is a violation of securities laws and FINRA rules. Signs of churning include frequent trades, high turnover ratio, and commissions that are disproportionate to your account size.
